There are a number of homeschool co-ops and support groups in Southeast Texas. They are all unique and serve homeschooling families in different ways. There are many benefits to being a part of a co-op, but it’s not for every family so it’s important to assess your priorities with the requirements of each organization to find the right fit.
Generally, strong academic co-ops meet once a week throughout the school year, collaborating in plays, musicals, science fairs, presentations, etc. They have materials and supplies that can take your at-home education to the next level, such as instruments, microscopes, stage/ sound/ lighting equipment, and most of all – classrooms of peers for your student. There are other opportunities that are not as structured that still create a sense of community and allow opportunities for bonding. Co-ops that meet twice a month tend to steer toward an organized field trip, a holiday party, park meet-up/ play date, or service project.
Having a group that you and your students are a part of can be an encouraging part of your journey – you can bounce ideas off each other, have an understanding shoulder to cry on, find another parent that has a unique situation similar to yours. It is important to decide the direction that is most natural for your students as you incorporate commitments outside the home into your curricula. Take some time to research and ask questions about the amount of time and commitment required of each group and see where that fits within your family’s needs/ desires.
We have rounded up some of the local SETX homeschool co-ops and support
groups here for you. They will also be at the SETX Homeschool Expo, come by and meet them to see all they have to offer!
